Results That Reflect Our Commitment
Choosing the right subjects is an important part of every learner’s academic journey. At Rob Ferreira High School, we aim to guide learners and parents through this process by providing clear information about the subjects offered in the different grades, as well as the available subject combinations for the Further Education and Training Phase.
In Grades 8 and 9, learners follow a broad academic programme that provides a strong foundation across key learning areas. These years are important in helping learners develop their knowledge, discover their interests, and prepare for future subject choices. The subject offering in these grades is designed to equip learners with the essential skills and understanding needed for the senior phase of their school career.
In Grades 10 to 12, learners move into more focused subject choices and combinations that align with their interests, strengths, and future goals. Subject selection during these years plays an important role in preparing learners for further study, career opportunities, and personal growth. It is therefore important that learners and parents consider subject choices carefully and make informed decisions based on both ability and future aspirations.
Below, you will find information on the Grade 8 and 9 subjects, as well as the subject combinations available for Grades 10 to 12. We encourage learners and parents to review these options thoughtfully and to seek guidance where needed in order to make the best possible choices for the future.
Grade 8 and 9 Subject Overview
We are committed to providing a balanced education that nurtures both the mind and the character of every learner. Our goal is to ensure that every learner leaves our school with the knowledge, confidence, and life skills needed to succeed in the future.
At Rob Ferreira High School, learners are encouraged to explore their interests through the following mandatory subjects:
Subject Choice Form
To assist with the subject selection process, parents and learners can access the relevant Subject Choice Form below. This form provides an important step in confirming the subjects or combinations selected and should be completed carefully.
We encourage families to review all subject information thoroughly before submitting the form. Choosing the correct subjects is an important decision, and thoughtful planning can help learners move forward with confidence and purpose.
Grade 10 to 12 Subject Combinations
In Grades 10 to 12, learners move into a more specialised academic phase where subject choices play an important role in shaping future study and career opportunities. At Rob Ferreira High School, subject combinations are structured to provide learners with a strong academic foundation while also supporting a variety of interests, strengths, and career paths. It is important that learners and parents consider these combinations carefully, as certain study fields and tertiary institutions have specific admission requirements.
University Admission and Exemption
Parents and learners are encouraged to take note of university admission requirements when selecting subjects. For university exemption, a learner must achieve at least 50% in four subjects from the recognised designated subject list. These subjects include:
Please note that CAT and Mathematical Literacy are only accepted by certain universities, and then only for selected courses. It is therefore very important to check the admission requirements of the specific university and course being considered.
Technical Subjects
Learners are only allowed to take one technical subject. This subject must be taken together with Mathematics or Technical Mathematics, as well as Physical Sciences or Technical Sciences, depending on the chosen pathway. In addition, it must also be taken with EGD (Technical Drawing).
Learners who follow this route may leave school with an N2 qualification, which allows them to continue directly to N3 studies after matric.
Subject Requirements for Specific Careers
Certain careers require specific subject choices. For example:
- Engineering: Learners must take Mathematics and Physical Science.
- Medicine and medical-related fields: Learners must take Mathematics, Physical Science, and Life Sciences. This also applies to study fields such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and other health sciences.
Because of this, it is very important that learners choose subjects with their future plans in mind.
Bilingual Classes
A number of subjects are presented as bilingual classes. These include:
These subjects are offered bilingually because there are not enough learners taking them to present separate Afrikaans and English classes. In order for a class to remain viable, a minimum of 10 learners per class is required.
Eight Subjects
Learners also have the opportunity to choose a eight subject, depending on the available options. These may include:
- Information Technology
- Dance
